EXTRA-VIRGIN OLIVE OIL AND BREAST MILK: WHY ARE THEY SIMILAR?

Even if its important role in the Mediterranean diet is well known, no one would have thought that extra-virgin olive oil could be similar to breast milk.

Saverio Pandolfi, a researcher at Cnr-Igv (Institute of Plant Genetics of the National Research Council), focused the attention on this peculiarity. He pointed out how “high quality extra-virgin olive oil is the most similar fat to breast milk”. But not all extra-virgin olive oils are equal to each other: to have the right characteristics, those similar to breast milk, “olives must be processed the right way”, Pandolfi said. In fact, only with the right working method the level of essential fatty acids Omega 3 and Omega 6, in the finished product, are similar to those found in breast milk. A feature that makes this fat particularly pleased to children.

In addition to Omega 3 and Omega 6, olive oil also contains oleuropein and oleocanthal, two molecules that are very important for our health. Oleuropein protects our cardiovascular system by increasing the elasticity of the arteries, lowering the blood pressure and fighting=atherosclerosis. Oleocanthal has instead anti-inflammatory properties similar to those of ibuprofen. These two molecules are also responsible for that bitter and spicy taste, typical of a high quality product.

“For all these reasons, a bit of high quality extra-virgin olive oil at every meal gives taste to food and health to our body”, Pandolfi concluded.
